Current Events
The People's Republic of China, established 1949.
Sun Yat-sen (Sun Yixian) - revolutionary leader and founder of the republic after the collapse of dynastic rule in 1911. His political theory known as "The Three Principles" promoted democracy, nationalism & livelihood.
Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek) - leader of the Nationalists during the Chinese Civil War and fought against Mao. His group was called the Kuomintang (Guomindang) Party. His support from capitalist nations, like the USA, was not enough to overcome the political corruption that led the government to fail to meet the needs of the people. His forces fled to the island of Taiwan after losing the war to the communists.
Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung) - communist revolutionary, nationalist leader and first authoritarian autocrat of the newly communist country. He established The People's Republic of China in 1949 after defeating Jiang Jieshi and the Nationalist Party in a civil war. His programs included the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution.
Deng Xiaoping - communist leader who took power after Mao's death. He set up free-market reforms through a program called Four Modernizations. This included elements of capitalism to boost the economy. However, the one-child policy and his authoritarian, autocratic rule are proof that, despite economic reforms, political reform did not take place in China and dissenters continue to be oppressed or persecuted in a society that is not free.
